My Take on The Exorcist Book vs. Movie
Recently, I decided to dive into The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty, a book that has long been on my reading list. Having seen the movie years ago, I was curious to see how the book compared. Surprisingly, I didn’t find the book as frightening as the movie, although it’s been a long time since I watched it.
One thing I found particularly interesting was how the book delves deeply into the psychological and medical aspects of young Regan’s symptoms, rather than focusing solely on the supernatural. This grounded approach made the story feel more real and relatable, though it did somewhat lessen the horror for me.
My wife isn’t a fan of scary movies, so she stayed clear of both the book and the film. It’s a bit of a running joke in our household. I even like to tease my mother when she visits, suggesting we watch The Exorcist. She’s been terrified of it since she was a child, and her reaction never fails to amuse me.
In the book, I found myself particularly drawn to two characters: Father Karras and Chris MacNeil. Father Karras’s struggle with his faith resonated with me on a personal level. His doubts and the way they intertwine with his professional responsibilities reminded me of the imposter syndrome I sometimes experience in the IT world. It’s a tough battle, but seeing it portrayed so vividly in the character of Karras was both comforting and inspiring.
Chris, on the other hand, stood out to me as a parent. Her relentless pursuit to find help for her daughter, Regan, despite the increasingly bizarre and terrifying circumstances, was nothing short of inspiring. As a father of two, I could deeply relate to her determination and unconditional love. It truly underscores the lengths a parent will go to for their child, even when faced with supernatural forces.
Overall, The Exorcist is a compelling read that offers more than just scares. It provides a deep, psychological exploration of its characters and themes, making it a worthwhile read for anyone interested in horror that goes beyond the typical supernatural tropes.
